Services for Referral Partners

Clinical services available through referral.

The Institute for Infant Feeding and Early Development provides distinct areas of infant specialty care: feeding and swallowing, lactation, infant occupational therapy and developmental evaluation, nutrition and growth, and NICU transition and follow-up. The descriptions below are written for clinical context to help providers identify the most appropriate service for their patient's presentation.

Feeding & Swallowing

Feeding and swallowing therapy.

Feeding Evaluation

A full clinical feeding evaluation including caregiver interview, review of medical and feeding history, clinical observation of feeding, oral motor assessment, and functional feeding analysis. The evaluation results in a clear set of clinical recommendations for the family and, upon request, a written summary for the referring provider.

Appropriate for: New referrals with any feeding concern, patients where the clinical picture is unclear, patients prior to initiating feeding therapy, or patients requiring formal documentation of current feeding status.

Why providers refer: Growth concerns with suspected feeding etiology, oral motor concerns, NICU discharge planning, need for clinical baseline before initiating therapy, parental concern about feeding safety or function.

Ongoing Feeding Therapy

Individualized outpatient feeding therapy for infants requiring continued clinical support over time. Sessions focus on feeding skill development, oral motor function, feeding progression and tolerance, and structured carryover into home feeding routines. Therapy is responsive to the child's progress and adjusted as goals evolve.

Appropriate for: Patients with identified feeding concerns requiring more than a one-time evaluation, children with persistent functional feeding deficits, families needing structured ongoing guidance and strategy adjustment.

Why providers refer: Continued feeding difficulty following evaluation, NICU graduates needing long-term outpatient feeding follow-up, children with oral motor or sensory concerns requiring sustained intervention.

Parent Coaching

Targeted caregiver education, feeding strategy support, and practical guidance for families managing complex or stressful feeding routines at home. May be appropriate as a stand-alone service or as part of ongoing therapy, particularly when the primary barrier to progress is caregiver uncertainty, anxiety, or implementation difficulty rather than a child-specific clinical deficit.

Appropriate for: Families with high feeding-related distress, caregivers managing feeding routines after NICU discharge, families with previous feeding guidance that has not translated into home practice.

Why providers refer: Patients whose primary feeding barrier is caregiver-side rather than a child clinical deficit; families needing structured education and support to implement recommendations from other providers.

Lactation Support

Lactation guidance as its own specialty.

Lactation Support

Lactation-informed guidance for families navigating breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or a mix of both, including latch concerns, feeding patterns, and transitions between breast and bottle. Support is grounded in what's realistic and sustainable for the family, not a single feeding method.

Appropriate for: Families with latch or nursing concerns, uncertainty about intake at breast, mixed feeding questions, or a need for practical, realistic feeding guidance.

Why providers refer: Pediatrician or lactation consultant request for additional support, families juggling breast and bottle without a clear plan, or a need for feeding guidance that fits daily life.

Lactation & Oral Function Overlap

For families navigating breastfeeding and bottle feeding together, particularly where oral function, latch quality, or transfer efficiency is in question. This addresses the functional feeding components that may be contributing to breastfeeding difficulty, bottle refusal, or poor transfer. We work alongside lactation consultants when both disciplines are involved in the family's care.

Appropriate for: Infants with suspected oral motor contribution to latch difficulty, infants with poor transfer at breast where oral function is a clinical question, families struggling with breast-to-bottle or bottle-to-breast transitions.

Why providers refer: Lactation consultants identifying oral motor concerns beyond the scope of LC care; pediatricians or APPs with concerns about oral function in breastfed infants.

Infant Occupational Therapy & Development

Developmental and movement care as its own specialty.

Infant Occupational Therapy & Developmental Evaluation

Focused infant occupational therapy evaluation and treatment for movement, positioning, tone, sensory regulation, play, and early milestones. Families receive a clear developmental assessment and a practical plan built around their baby.

Appropriate for: Infants with emerging motor, sensory, or milestone concerns, or families wanting a developmental assessment regardless of feeding status.

Why providers refer: Parental concern about movement or milestones, delayed rolling, sitting, or crawling, sensory regulation questions, or developmental follow-up after prematurity.

Torticollis, Head Preference & Motor Asymmetry

Evaluation and treatment for torticollis, a persistent head-turning preference, flat spots (plagiocephaly), and motor asymmetry: common early findings that respond well to focused occupational therapy.

Appropriate for: Infants with a head-turning preference, neck tightness, flattening on one side of the head, or asymmetric movement patterns noted at a well visit.

Why providers refer: Pediatrician or well-visit finding of torticollis or plagiocephaly, caregiver-reported head-turning preference, or asymmetric tummy-time tolerance.

Nutrition & Growth

Registered dietitian-led nutrition care.

Nutrition & Growth Support

Registered dietitian evaluation for infants with growth, weight gain, formula, fortification, or intake and tolerance concerns. Nutrition care stands on its own as a specialty, and coordinates directly with feeding therapy when both are part of a baby's care.

Appropriate for: Infants with slow or plateaued weight gain, prematurity-related growth tracking, formula or fortification questions, or possible intolerance, whether or not feeding function is a factor.

Why providers refer: Growth concerns identified at a well visit, questions about formula changes or fortification, or a need for dietitian-level review of intake and growth trends.

NICU Transition & Follow-Up

Multidisciplinary support after NICU discharge.

NICU Transition & Follow-Up

Coordinated outpatient follow-up for infants coming home from the NICU, bringing together feeding evaluation, lactation support, nutrition assessment, and developmental testing as needed for each baby. A visit summary is available to the referring or follow-up team within 48 hours.

Appropriate for: Premature or medically complex infants transitioning home from the NICU, families needing continued outpatient support across feeding, growth, or development, and infants with unresolved concerns at discharge.

Why providers refer: NICU discharge planning, follow-up clinic referral, or pediatrician concern about post-NICU feeding, growth, or developmental progress.

Specialty Programs

Additional structured support for specific needs.

Feeding Intensives

A full day of concentrated care in our private on-site nursery. Mother and infant remain on-site while our team works through multiple feedings across the day to characterize the feeding pattern and initiate intervention more rapidly than a standard weekly cadence allows.

Prenatal Class & Newborn Preparation

An interactive class for expectant parents led by professionals who specialize in infants. Covers what to expect immediately after delivery, newborn care essentials, and preparing the home. Families leave with a folder of printed resources.

Parent Support Groups

Small-group sessions for caregivers navigating shared feeding challenges, providing structured education and peer connection during early feeding transitions.
